About the project . . .

The clients approached us with a desire to expand a Craftsman-style home in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Atlanta that had outgrown its original footprint. Designed for a family of four, the renovation balances respect for the home's historic charm with an expansion that supports evolving needs.

At the rear, a split-level addition introduces new layers of function: a garage and private office below, and a family room and primary suite above. The office, used for the wife’s nutrition practice, has its own entrance—offering both privacy and professional separation. Above, the new primary suite creates a quiet retreat with a bedroom, spacious bath, and tucked-away work nook.

A central challenge was integrating old and new. The transition at the stair that bisect the plan is handled with care—a window brings in light, while a custom bookcase opens the hallway and creates visual flow. These details turn what could be a simple corridor into a point of connection and calm.

Materials and color ground the design in place. Green cabinetry and a soft, natural palette echo the surrounding landscape, while a pale blue ceiling nods to “Haint Blue,” a Southern tradition tied to both folklore and sky. Inside the kitchen and dining room, curated furnishings and artwork lend the space a warm, lived-in character that reflects the family’s creativity.

The exterior remains rooted in its Craftsman identity. The original front porch is preserved and enhanced, while a new back porch frames the reimagined yard—giving parents a view of their children at play and extending the home’s rhythm outdoors. Landscaping blends native and ornamental plants, offering texture, privacy, and seasonal color.

Throughout, the design strikes a balance between tradition and modern life. Earthy tones, custom millwork, and expressive details reflect personal taste while supporting the routines of a growing family. From the cozy stair nook to the light-filled media room, the home now offers both quiet corners and space to move.

The goal of this design was to no only add on to the home, but to reinvent it. The project is designed to be more open, more flexible, and ready for the next chapter.
